Missouri is often referred to as the Gateway to the West. It is named for a Sioux Indian tribe, whose name translates to “the wooden canoe people.” Missouri covers 68,886 square miles, with a 2010 estimated population of 5,988,927 people – 1,613,417 living in rural Missouri (USDA-ERS). Jefferson City, the capital, is located in the central region of the state. The state’s largest cities are Jefferson City, Kansas City, St. Louis and Springfield. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 82.8% of the state’s population is white, 11.6% is Black/African-American, 1.6% is Asian, 3.5% is of Hispanic/Latino origin, 0.4 percent American Indian/Alaskan Native, 0.1 percent Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander, and 1.9 percent other/multiple races. (2010).
There are 118 hospitals in Missouri, 68 of which are located in rural areas (North Carolina Rural Health Research and Policy Analysis Center, Dec. 2008). The state has 36 hospitals identified by the Flex Monitoring Team as Critical Access Hospitals, with 25 or less critical access beds. Of the 68 rural hospitals, only 14 have over 100 staffed beds. (Sept. 2010). There are 365 Rural Health Clinics in Missouri (Missouri Office of Primary Care and Rural Health, 2011), and 21 Federally Qualified Health Centers provide services at 180 sites in the state (Kaiser, 2010). Most Missourians have some form of health insurance coverage, although 14.0% of its residents lack health insurance (Kaiser, 2008-2009).
According to the USDA Economic Research Service, the average per-capita income for Missourians in 2009 was $36,181 although rural per-capita income lagged at $29,640. 2010 estimates indicate a poverty rate of 18.8% exists in rural Missouri, compared to a 14.0% level in urban areas of the state. 2010 ACS data reports that 18.6% of the rural population has not completed high school, compared to 12.0% of urban populations. The unemployment rate in rural Missouri is at 9.5%, while in urban Missouri it is at 9.6% (USDA-ERS, 2010).
