The Colorado Health Service Corps provides loan repayment assistance to certain health care professionals who agree to practice in a Health Professional Shortage Area of Colorado.


Applicants must have a full, unrestricted license to operate in Colorado, see patients on public insurance programs, utilize a sliding scale fee, and provide 40 hours of full-time direct clinical care.

Eligible health professions include:

  • Certified nurse-midwives
  • Clinical or counseling psychologists (Ph.D., Psy.D. or equivalent)
  • Dentists (general and pediatric practice)
  • Doctors of osteopathic or allopathic medicine (family medicine, geriatrics, general internal medicine, general psychiatry, general child psychiatry, general pediatrics, and general obstetrics/gynecology)
  • Licensed clinical social workers (master’s or doctoral degree in social work)
  • Licensed professional counselors (master’s or doctoral degree with a major study in counseling)
  • Marriage and family therapists (master’s or doctoral degree with a major study in marriage and family therapy)
  • Primary care certified nurse practitioners
  • Primary care physician assistants
  • Psychiatric nurse specialists
  • Registered dental hygienists
Amount of

Nontaxable awards may be made up to $35,000 for each year of service. All contracts are for two to three years, though the program's goal is to facilitate long-term retention of the provider in an underserved Colorado community beyond his or her contract with the state.


Online applications are available on the program website. Applying for loan repayment through the Colorado Health Service Corps is a two part process. An administrator from an applicant's site must also complete an organization pre-designation application.
