Purpose

The Rural Illinois Medical Student Assistance Program provides loans and/or recommendations to University of Illinois Medical School students who wish to specialize in family practice or another primary healthcare field. Recipients must agree to practice medicine in an approved rural community in Illinois for a period of one year for each year that financial aid is taken, upon graduation. Freshmen applicants receiving a recommendation must commit to a five-year practice period.

Eligibility

Only University of Illinois Medical School students are eligible. Students must be willing to specialize in family practice or another primary healthcare field and work in rural Illinois after graduation.

Applicants must be:

  1. Illinois residents
  2. In the fourth year of college or have a bachelor's degree
  3. Have the signature of the county medical society president or secretary on the application
  4. Have the county Farm Bureau president's signature on the application

Approved residencies include General Internal Medicine, General OB-GYN, General Pediatrics, Combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Anesthesiology, Psychiatry and Ophthalmology.

Amount of funding

Loans of $6,250 are available per semester with a maximum of $50,000 for four years of medical school. The interest rate is 4%.

Application process

Applicants must must apply to the University of Illinois College of Medicine (UICOM) by completing the required American Medical College Admission Service Forms. AMCAS applications must be submitted by October 1.

Eligible applicants will receive an e-mail from the UICOM to complete the secondary application, which will include the RIMSAP application. Submit secondary applications by November 1.
