Purpose The Colonia Area Planning Fund provides assistance for the completion of planning activities that prepare colonia areas for needed water, sewer and housing improvements.
Eligibility County governments must submit an application on behalf of eligible colonia areas, the colonia area(s) must be located within 150 miles of the Texas-Mexico border region, except that any county that is part of a standard metropolitan statistical area with a population exceeding 1,000,000 is not eligible under this fund.

Awards are based on an annual competition among the eligible counties that submit Colonia Area Planning Fund applications including benefit to low to moderate-income persons, community distress and project design. Maximum award is $100,000.
