| Purpose |
The University of Kansas Medical Center, Rural Health Education and Services, administers the Kansas Bridging Plan, a loan forgiveness program offered to residents in family medicine, general internal medicine, general pediatrics, or medicine/pediatrics residency programs in Kansas. Since 1991, the Kansas Bridging Plan has sought to encourage residents to practice in a rural community upon completion of residency training, and supports those residents with loan forgiveness.
Resident physicians who participate in the Kansas Bridging Plan agree to practice medicine full-time in the selected rural community for 36 continuous months upon completion of their residency training program in exchange for loan forgiveness. For the purposes of the Kansas Bridging Plan, a rural community constitutes any community not located in Douglas, Johnson, Sedgwick, Shawnee, or Wyandotte County. |
| Eligibility |
Residents in Family Practice, General Internal Medicine, General Pediatrics, and Medicine/Pediatrics residency programs operated in the State of Kansas and approved by the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts are eligible to apply for the Kansas Bridging Plan. |

The Kansas Bridging Plan loan forgiveness consists of two separate loans: one from the state of Kansas, and the other from a rural health care organization selected by the resident physician and with whom the resident physician signs a practice commitment agreement. The state of Kansas, through the Kansas Bridging Plan, will loan participating resident physicians up to $10,000. A loan of $5,000 is usually distributed each year, during the second and third years of residency training. The rural health care organization, with whom the resident physician signs the practice commitment agreement, agrees to match the amount loaned by the state, and to loan an additional $6,000 upon completion of residency training. The combined total of both loans can be up to $26,000. |

The application process is initiated by completing an Application Form. Forms are available on the program web site, and in the offices of Rural Health Education and Services in Kansas City and Wichita. They will be glad to fax or mail a form to you if you are unable to access the form from this web site.
