| Purpose |
Funding to support short-term preparatory, pilot or feasibility studies that will inform larger scale real world health IT implementation and use or the conduct of more comprehensive health IT implementation research.
This FOA is focused on three research areas of interest:
1. Health IT to improve the quality and safety of medication management via the integration and utilization of medication management systems and technologies;
2. Health IT to support patient-centered care, the coordination of care across transitions in care settings, and the use of electronic exchange of health information to improve quality of care; and,
3. Health IT to improve health care decision making through the use of integrated data and knowledge management.
Each application must clearly identify one of these research areas as the primary research area to be addressed.

| Eligibility |
You may submit an application(s) if your domestic institution/organization is a:
- Public or non-profit private institution, such as a university, college, or a faith-based or community-based organization;
- Units of local or State government;
- Eligible agencies of the Federal government.
- Indian/Native American Tribal Government (Federally Recognized);
- Indian/Native American Tribal Government (Other than Federally Recognized);
- Indian/Native American Tribally Designated Organizations.

The total costs awarded under this FOA will not exceed $300,000 over the entire project period. The maximum length of the project period for an application submitted in response to this funding opportunity is two years. Although the size of award may vary with the scope of the research proposed, applications must stay within the budgetary guidelines for an exploratory/developmental project; total costs are limited to $300,000 over an R21 two-year period, with no more than $200,000 in total costs allowed in any single year. An application with a project period that exceeds two years, or budget that exceeds $300,000 in total costs, will not be reviewed. |
