The nationally renowned AHA-NPSF Patient Safety Leadership Fellowship, now in its ninth year, is a one-year intensive professional development program focused on expanding knowledge and skills in patient safety, developing leadership competencies, and promoting breakthroughs in patient safety practice. Through a dynamic, participation-centered, structured learning experience, the program provides health care professionals an opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills in patient safety improvement, integrate innovative improvement strategies into their day-to-day work, and develop the leadership skills needed to foster a culture of safety in their organizations.
In addition to providing an extensive knowledge base in patient safety science and practice, the Fellowship extensively explores the business, cultural, and leadership implications for embracing cultures of safety and teaches fellows the skills necessary to implement change and spread promising practices more systematically. While continuing their professional responsibilities, fellows:
- Attend learning retreats led by national experts in patient safety and quality improvement
- Receive peer support and coaching from leading innovators
- Complete a self-study curriculum and participate in webinars, audioconferences, and virtual discussion groups
- Design and complete an Action Learning Project, a major patient safety or quality improvement project for their organization
