Deadlines April 6, 2009
Purpose A total of up to $2.5 million is available to federally recognized Indian tribes and nonprofit tribal organizations to help American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities develop, establish, and operate specialized services and procedures to improve the investigation, prosecution, and overall handling of cases of child abuse, and to address the needs of AI/AN child abuse victims in a manner that lessens the trauma to the victims and increases culturally appropriate service provision.
Eligibility Eligible applicants are federally recognized tribes and nonprofit tribal organizations. These awards will be limited to tribal organizations as defined in the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act, Public Law 93-638, 25 U.S.C.,§450(b). Under this provision, the definition of “tribal organization” is the recognized governing body of any Indian tribe, to include any legally established organization of Indians that is controlled, sanctioned, or chartered by such governing body, or that is democratically elected by the adult members of the Indian community to be served by such organization, and that includes the maximum participation of Indians in all phases of its activities.

Faith-Based And Other Community Organizations: Consistent with Executive Order 13279, dated December 12, 2002, and 28 C.F.R. Part 38, faith-based and other community organizations that statutorily qualify as eligible applicants under DOJ programs are invited and encouraged to apply for assistance awards to fund eligible grant activities. Faith-based and other community organizations will be considered for awards on the same basis as other eligible applicants and, if they receive assistance awards, will be treated on an equal basis with all other grantees in the administration of such awards. No eligible applicant or grantee will be discriminated for or against on the basis of its religious character or affiliation, religious name, or the religious composition of its board of directors or persons working in the organization.
