| Purpose |
The purpose of the program is to reduce commercial tobacco use and abuse among American Indian and Alaska Native tribal members; eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke; promote commercial tobacco cessation; and prevent youth initiation to commercial tobacco use. This program announcement addresses the “Healthy People 2010” focus area(s) of tobacco use. This announcement is related to the two primary goals of: 1) increasing quality and years of healthy life; and 2) eliminating health disparities among segments of the population. Disparities may be described as differences that occur by gender, race or ethnicity, education or income, disability, geographic location, or sexual orientation. |
| Eligibility |
Eligible applicants that can apply for this funding opportunity are listed below: • Federally recognized or state-recognized American Indian/Alaska Native tribal governments • American Indian/Alaska Native tribally designated organizations • Alaska Native health corporations • Urban Indian health programs • Tribal Epidemiology Centers Urban Indian Health Programs (UIHP) consist of 34 non-profit 501(3) (c) organizations nationwide that are funded through grants and contracts by the Indian Health Service., under Title V of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act, PL 94-437, as amended. American Indian/Alaska Native tribally-designated Organization is defined as the recognized governing body of any American Indian/Alaska Native tribe and/or any legally established organization of American Indian/Alaska Native tribes which is controlled, sanctioned, or chartered by such governing body, or which is democratically elected by the adult members of the Indian community to be served by such organization and which includes the maximum participation of Indians in all phases of its activities: provided, that in any case where a cooperative agreement is made to an organization to perform services benefiting more than one Indian tribe, the approval of each such Indian tribe shall be a prerequisite to the making of such cooperative agreement. Tribal Epidemiology Centers are Indian Health Service funded organizations that serve American Indian/Alaska Native Tribal and urban communities by managing public health information systems, investigating diseases of concern, managing disease prevention and control programs, responding to public health emergencies, and coordinating these activities with other public health authorities. |
