The Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) provides grants to projects designed to increase and support opportunities for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds to enter and graduate from health professions. National HCOP Academies strengthen the health workforce pipeline in medically underserved and rural areas by providing both academic and social supports to students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Program goals are:
- Improve recruitment, matriculation, retention, and graduation rates by implementing tailored enrichment programs designed to address the academic and social needs of students from disadvantaged backgrounds
- Provide opportunities for community-based experiential health professions training, emphasizing experiences in underserved communities
Applicants are required to propose activities for program requirements:
- Recruitment
- Counseling, mentoring, and other services
- Preliminary education and health research training
- Financial aid information dissemination
- Primary care exposure activities
- Development of a more competitive applicant pool
- Stipends
- Scholarships
Criteria for structured and unstructured program activities are provided in the application instructions.
Eligible applicants include accredited schools of:
- Allopathic medicine
- Osteopathic medicine
- Public health
- Dentistry
- Veterinary medicine
- Optometry
- Pharmacy
- Allied health
- Chiropractic
- Podiatric medicine
- Public and nonprofit private schools that offer graduate programs in behavioral and mental health
- Programs for the training of physician assistants
- Other public or private nonprofit health or educational entities including community colleges, technical colleges, and tribal colleges

Project period: 5 years
