Deadlines September 30, 2010
Purpose The purpose of the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Loan Repayment Program (LRP) is to ensure an adequate supply of health professionals to provide primary health services (through a culturally competent, interdisciplinary team of clinicians) to populations located in selected health professional shortage areas (HPSAs) identified by the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. HPSAs can be found in rural and urban communities across the Nation. The NHSC LRP recruits fully trained health professionals who agree to provide primary health services in NHSC community sites. In return, the NHSC LRP assists clinicians in their repayment of qualifying educational loans that are still owed. The NHSC is seeking clinicians that demonstrate the characteristics for and interest in serving the Nation's medically underserved populations and remaining in HPSAs beyond their service commitment. It is important to remember that service to medically underserved populations is the primary purpose of the NHSC LRP and not the repayment of educational loans.
Eligibility If you are fully trained and licensed, a U.S. citizen or national, and working at an approved site within a designated Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA), you may apply for this generous loan repayment program.

The NHSC Loan Repayment Program is open to fully trained:

  • Primary care physicians: MD or DO in family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics-gynecology, psychiatry
  • Primary care nurse practitioners
  • Certified nurse-midwives
  • Primary care physician assistants
  • Dentists: general or pediatric
  • Dental hygienists
  • Behavioral and mental health providers: health service psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, psychiatric nurse specialists, marriage and family therapists, and licensed professional counselor
For more details about eligibility, please see the program web site.

Applicants who are selected to participate agree to provide full-time primary care services in an approved practice site, located in a federally designated health professional shortage area. For the 2-year minimum service commitment, the NHSC will pay up to $50,000, based on the participant's qualifying educational loans. Opportunities to continue participating in the program beyond 2 years may be available.

The NHSC LRP is a highly competitive program with limited funding. An NHSC LRP contract award is contingent upon availability of funds.
