Purpose The purpose of the awards is to encourage people with disabilities to prepare for and find employment in their chosen field, as well as to encourage employers to recognize the advantages of hiring people with disabilities.
Eligibility Any individual is eligible whose physical disability is of such severity that his or her successful continuous employment during the last three years represents a significant accomplishment. The nominees must be vocationally and financially independent. Self-employed individuals and employers are eligible if they have been working steadily for a minimum of three years and meet the above criteria. Employees of Courage Center are not eligible. The award is open to people living in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and North and South Dakota. Additional factors such as attitude, leadership, character and community involvement will also be considered in selecting the award recipients.

Winners receive a $2,000 cash award and a special plaque, made possible by a grant from the Jay and Rose Phillips Family Foundation of Minneapolis. Award winners are invited to a formal award presentation during the 2010 Celebration of Courage, this year set for Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Earle Brown Heritage Center in Brooklyn Center.
