Missouri is often referred to as the Gateway to the West. It is named for a Sioux Indian tribe, whose name translates to “the wooden canoe people.” Missouri covers 68,886 square miles, with a 2007 estimated population of 5,878,415 people – 1,564,150 living in rural Missouri (USDA-ERS). Jefferson City, the capital, is located in the central region of the state. The state’s largest cities are Jefferson City, Kansas City, St. Louis, and Springfield. According to the 2006 Census, 85.1% of the state’s population is white, 11.5% is Black/African-American, 0.5% is American Indian, 1.4% is Asian, and 2.8% is of Hispanic/Latino origin.
There are 116 hospitals in Missouri,
56 of which are located in rural areas (North Carolina Rural Health
Research and Policy Analysis Center, 2007). The state has 36 hospitals
currently identified by the Flex Monitoring Team as Critical Access Hospitals.
There are 271 Rural Health Clinics in Missouri, and 19 Federally Qualified Health
Centers provide services at 111 sites in the state (Kaiser, 2006). Most Missourians
have some form of health insurance coverage, although 13% of its residents lack
any health insurance (Kaiser, 2005-2006.)
According to the Economic Research Service, the average per-capita income for all Missourians in 2006 was $32,789 although rural per-capita income lagged at $24,978. 2005 estimates indicate a poverty rate of 17.7% exists in rural Missouri, compared to a 12.1% level in urban areas of the state. 2000 data reports 24.7% of the rural population has not completed high school, while only 16.4% of the urban population lacks a high school diploma. The unemployment rate in rural Missouri is at 5.4%, while in urban Missouri it is at 4.9% (USDA-ERS, 2007).
