On December 18, 1787, New Jersey became the third state to ratify the Constitution of the United States and join in this great union. New Jersey covers 7,417 square miles, with a 2010 estimated population of 8,791,894 people (USDA-ERS). Trenton is the state capital. The state’s largest cities are Newark, Jersey City and Paterson. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 68.6% of the state’s population is white, 13.7% is Black/African-American, 8.3% is Asian, and 17.7% is of Hispanic/Latino origin (2010).
There are 68 hospitals in New Jersey, none of which are located in rural areas (North Carolina Rural Health Research and Policy Analysis Center, Dec. 2008). The state has zero hospitals identified by the Flex Monitoring Team as Critical Access Hospitals. There are zero Rural Health Clinics in New Jersey (Kaiser, 2011). There are 20 Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) with 120 FQHC service delivery sites (Kaiser, 2010) in the state. 15.0% percent of New Jersey residents lack health insurance (Kaiser, 2008-2009).
According to the USDA Economic Research Service, the average per-capita income for New Jersey residents in 2009 was $49,980. Estimates from 2010 indicate a state-wide poverty rate of 10.2%. 2010 ACS data from reports that 12.7% of the population has not completed high school. The unemployment rate in New Jersey is 9.5% (USDA-ERS, 2010).
