On December 18, 1787, New Jersey became the third state to ratify the Constitution of the United States and join in this great union. New Jersey covers 7,417 square miles, with a 2008 estimated population of 8,682,661 people (USDA-ERS). Trenton is the state capital. The state’s largest cities are Newark, Jersey City, and Paterson. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 76.3% of the state’s population is white, 14.5% is Black/African-American, 7.5% is Asian, and 15.9% is of Hispanic/Latino origin (2007).
There are 68 hospitals in New Jersey, none of which are located in rural areas (North Carolina Rural Health Research and Policy Analysis Center, Dec. 2008). The state has zero hospitals currently identified by the Flex Monitoring Team as Critical Access Hospitals. There are zero Rural Health Clinics in New Jersey, and 19 Federally Qualified Health Centers (New Jersey Primary Care Association, June 2009) provide services at 99 sites (Kaiser, 2007) in the state. 15.6% percent of New Jersey residents lack any health insurance (Kaiser, 2006-2007).
According to the USDA Economic Research Service, the average per-capita income for all New Jersey residents in 2007 was $49,511. Estimates from 2007 indicate a poverty rate of 8.5%. Data from 2000 reports that 17.9% of the population has not completed high school. The unemployment rate in New Jersey is 5.% (USDA-ERS, 2008).
