North Dakota is named after the Dakota Indian Tribes who were the early inhabitants of the region. Dakota is most often referred to mean “friends” or “allies.” It is home to the International Peace Garden that straddles the border between the United States and Manitoba, Canada. North Dakota covers 68,976 square miles, with a 2011 estimated population of 683,932 people - 354,087 living in rural North Dakota (USDA-ERS). Bismarck, the capital, is located in the south-central region of the state. The state’s largest cities are Bismarck, Fargo, Grand Forks and Minot. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 90.4% of the state’s population is white, 5.5% is American Indian & Alaska Native, and 2.2% is of Hispanic/Latino origin (2011).
There are 52 certified hospitals in North Dakota (ND Department of Health, 2012). The state has 36 hospitals identified by the Flex Monitoring Team as Critical Access Hospitals (March 2013). There are 57 Rural Health Clinics in North Dakota (Kaiser, 2012) and 4 Federally Qualified Health Centers provide services at 19 sites in the state (Kaiser, 2010). Most North Dakotans have some form of health insurance coverage, although 11.0% of its residents lack health insurance (Kaiser, 2011).
According to the USDA Economic Research Service, the average per-capita income for North Dakotans in 2010 was $42,890, and rural per-capita income at $44,590. Estimates from 2010 indicate a poverty rate of 12.9% exists in rural North Dakota, compared to a 12.0% level in urban areas of the state. 2010 ACS data reports that 13.3% of the rural population has not completed high school, compared to 7.4% of urban populations. The unemployment rate in rural North Dakota is at 3.5%, while in urban North Dakota it is at 3.5% (USDA-ERS, 2011).
