North Dakota is named after the Dakota Indian Tribes who were the early inhabitants of the region. Dakota is most often referred to mean “friends” or “allies.” It is home to the International Peace Garden that straddles the border between the United States and Manitoba, Canada. North Dakota covers 68,976 square miles, with a 2010 estimated population of 672,591 people - 347,173 living in rural North Dakota (USDA-ERS). Bismarck, the capital, is located in the south-central region of the state. The state’s largest cities are Bismarck, Fargo, Grand Forks and Minot. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 90.0% of the state’s population is white, 5.4% is American Indian & Alaska Native, and 2.0% is of Hispanic/Latino origin (2010).

There are 47 certified general acute care hospitals in North Dakota and 38 of which are located in rural areas (UND Center for Rural Health, 2010). The state has 36 hospitals identified as Critical Access Hospitals (UND Center for Rural Health, 2010). There are 58 Rural Health Clinics in North Dakota (Kaiser, 2011) and 4 Federally Qualified Health Centers provide services at 23 sites in the state (Kaiser, 2010). Most North Dakotans have some form of health insurance coverage, although 8.2% of its residents lack health insurance (UND Center for Rural Health, 2008).

According to the USDA Economic Research Service, the average per-capita income for North Dakotans in 2009 was $40,802, and rural per-capita income at $41,649. 2010 estimates indicate a poverty rate of 12.9% exists in rural North Dakota, compared to a 12.0% level in urban areas of the state. 2010 ACS data reports that 13.3% of the rural population has not completed high school, compared to 7.4% of urban populations. The unemployment rate in rural North Dakota is at 4.0%, while in urban North Dakota it is at 3.9% (USDA-ERS, 2010).
