Ohio is known as the "Buckeye State" for its many buckeye trees. It is located in the Great Lakes region, with shoreline on Lake Erie and is bordered on the south by the Ohio River. The state has produced eight presidents, earning it the name "The Mother of Presidents." Ohio covers 40,948 square miles, with a 2011 estimated population of 11,544,951 people – 2,234,325 living in rural Ohio (USDA-ERS). Columbus, the capital, is located in the central part of the state. The state’s largest cities are Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 83.6% of the state’s population is white, 12.4% is African-American/Black, 1.7% is Asian, and 3.2% is of Hispanic/Latino origin (2011).
There are 183 hospitals in Ohio (Kaiser, 2010). The state has 34 hospitals identified by the Flex Monitoring Team as Critical Access Hospitals (March 2013). There are 22 Rural Health Clinics in Ohio (Kaiser, 2012) and 38 Federally Qualified Health Centers provide services at 160 sites in the state (OACHC, 2012). Most Ohioans have some form of health insurance coverage, although 14.0% of the state's residents lack health insurance (Kaiser, 2011).
According to the USDA Economic Research Service, the average per-capita income for Ohioans in 2010 was $36,162, although rural per-capita income lagged at $29,773. Estimates from 2010 indicate a poverty rate of 16.1% exists in rural Ohio, compared to a 15.7% level in urban areas of the state. 2010 ACS data reports that 15.3% of the rural population has not completed high school, compared to 11.9% of urban populations. The unemployment rate in rural Ohio is 9.7%, while in urban Ohio it is at 8.4% (USDA-ERS, 2011).
