The U.S. Virgin Islands is a group of four main islands and many
smaller islands, located between the Caribbean Sea and the North
Atlantic Ocean, east of Puerto Rico. It is an organized, unincorporated
territory of the United States, and its residents are U.S. citizens.
The Virgin Islands has a land mass of 346 square miles, with a
population of 109,825 (based on CIA's 2009 estimate). The capital, Charlotte Amalie, is located
on the island of Saint Thomas. According to the 2000 Census, 76.2%
of the population is African-American/Black, 13.1% is white, and
14.0% is Hispanic/Latino. 74.7% of the population speaks only English,
and 16.8% of the population speaks Spanish.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the median family income
for residents of the U.S. Virgin Islands in 2007 was $32,300 (The Occupational Employment Survey),
with approximately 28.7% of families below poverty level. Data
from the 2000 Census finds that 39.4% of residents had not completed
high school. Approximately 65.1% of the population 16 years and
older is part of the labor force, with 59.5% employed (U.S. Census, 2000) and 6.2%
unemployed (CIA, 2004).
