States served Connecticut
Description The Connecticut Office of Rural Health (CT-ORH), last spring, contracted with the firm Holt, Wexler & Farnam (HWF), LLP of New Haven, CT to identify existing available data sources, and analyze and report the key health care issues impacting rural Connecticut. The goals of the project were to capture a picture of current health care issues impacting rural CT, gain a better understanding of the health status of rural residents and develop a supporting rural health data base.

CT-ORH designates 65 towns as rural. For this report, HWF categorized the towns into three zones, East, Northwest and CT River Region.

An extensive search of existing rural health reports and town data was conducted. Specific data and health indicators were either available at local, county or only state level.

Services offered A survey was distributed to 125 rural health care providers to determine from their perspective, what barriers exist for rural residents to access services and what services were lacking.
Results The survey results indicated concerns regarding transportation services in rural communities, adequate services for substance abuse, domestic violence, oral health care and mental health services.
Replication The entire report, Rural Community Health in Connecticut: Challenges and Opportunities can be found on the CT-ORH website http://www.ruralhealthct.org/report.htm. This report is helping to drive future CT-ORH initiatives
