America loves its children, but when children have children, the statistics, data, and consequences are disheartening. Teen pregnancy rates in the United States are higher than most of the industrialized world with nearly three in ten (28%) of all teenage girls getting pregnant at least once before they reach age 20. This results in 750,000 teen pregnancies a year.

According to data from the National Center for Health Statistics, between 2005 and 2007, births to teens rose by five percent, the first increase in 15 years. However, in 2009 it reached a record low for the nation, decreasing by 8% since 2007. While the overall trend towards decrease is encouraging, the US teen birth rate remains nearly two times higher than the United Kingdom and nearly ten times higher than in Switzerland.

Data and research have shown teen pregnancy to be associated with poor health and poverty for the teen mother and the child, and to have serious consequences for society. Organizations like the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy advocate prevention and provide information about carefully evaluated programs to help reduce these numbers.
