Purpose

Encourages collaborative and participatory efforts among citizens in rural communities that will help to strengthen their towns and regions in a number of civic areas including, but not limited to:

  • Economic development
  • Business preservation
  • Arts and humanities
  • Public space improvements
  • Education

Past grants have funded community wellness trails, playground renovations, food projects, and programs to reduce social isolation for elderly adults, among other things.

Eligibility

Applicants must be located in a community with a population of 10,000 or fewer in Colorado, Hawaii, Minnesota, Wyoming, and certain counties in New York and Texas.

Applications will be accepted from:

  • Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations
  • Units of government at the local level
Geographic coverage
Colorado, Hawaii, Minnesota, Wyoming, New York, Texas. A list of the specific counties eligible in New York and Texas is available on the program website under the "Limits of Geography" heading.
Amount of funding

Planning: Up to $5,000
These funds may support costs like: consultant or staff time, meeting costs, mailings, secretarial support, refreshments, local travel, and childcare.

Implementation: Up to $25,000
These funds are available to implement community based rural projects that originate in, have been planned by, and involve diverse people from the local community. General operating support and capital campaigns will not be supported.

Projects must demonstrate matching financial and/or in-kind contributions from the local community.
