Purpose

The California Department of Health Care Services will provide funding for tribal entities in California to operate bridge housing. Housing should address the immediate housing needs of people experiencing homelessness who have serious behavioral health conditions, including serious mental illness (SMI) and/or substance use disorder (SUD).

Funding may be used for both planning and implementation.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants include:

  • Federally recognized tribes
  • Tribal organizations
  • Urban Indian organizations
  • Healthcare programs operated by a tribe, tribal organization, or urban Indian organization

Other eligible applicants can include organizations such as Tribally Designated Housing Entities, 501(c)(3) nonprofits, and for-profit businesses that have written support from an eligible tribal entity for a proposed bridge housing program benefiting a tribal community.

Award ceiling: Up to $150,000 for planning grants and up to $5,000,000 for implementation grants
Estimated total program funding: $20,000,000

Application process

Links to additional guidance, application instructions, and the online application portal are available on the program website when applications are being accepted.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, with 2 preliminary application deadlines: April 17 and June 19, 2024.

Additional rolling application periods will be added, as needed, until the funds are depleted.
