Purpose

The Recruitment and Retention Community Project (RRCP) offers grants to eligible healthcare employers in rural West Virginia to provide loan repayment assistance to primary care health professionals who agree to practice in underserved areas. The purpose of the program is to support rural recruitment and retention efforts and increase the availability of qualified primary care providers in rural areas.

Providers receiving loan repayment through this program must agree to a minimum 1-year service contract, with a maximum of 4 years.

Awards may also be made for other recruitment and retention activities, including:

  • Residency or training program stipends
  • Sign-on bonuses
  • Moving expenses
  • Retention award for candidates that are considering leaving at the end of their contract
  • Other activities on a case-by-case basis
Eligibility

Eligible healthcare employers must be located in a rural Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) or a Medically Underserved Area (MUA) of West Virginia. Eligible facilities include but are not limited to primary care centers, small rural hospitals, local health departments, and private practitioners.

  • Nurse practitioners
  • Physician assistants
  • Nurse midwives
  • Psychiatrists
  • Dentists
  • Pharmacists

Amount of funding

Employers are eligible to receive up to $10,000 per candidate, for a maximum of 5 candidates per year. The employer or community must provide a $10,000 matching contribution, for a total of $20,000 per candidate in a fiscal year.
