The Minnesota Office of Rural Health and Primary Care will provide funding to health professional training sites to add rural and underserved rotations or clinical training experiences to existing clinical training programs. Rural and underserved training experiences may include credential or certificate rural tracks or other specialized training.

Funds may be used to:

• Establish or expand rotations and clinical training
• Recruit, train, and retain students and faculty
• Connect students with appropriate clinical training sites, internships, practicums, or externship activities
• Cover travel and lodging expenses for students
• Cover faculty, student, and preceptor salaries, incentives, or other financial support
• Develop and implement cultural competency training
• Conduct evaluations
• Pay for training site improvements, fees, equipment, and supplies required to establish, maintain, or expand a training program
• Support clinical education in which trainees are part of a primary care team model

Expanded rural/underserved training for physician and dentist programs must include rotations in primary care settings such as community clinics, hospitals, health maintenance organizations, or practices in rural communities.

Priority will be given to programs that advance health equity in other impactful ways and those with a strong model of team-based primary care.

Eligible clinical training programs include:

• Advanced Practice Registered Nursing
• Dental
• Dental Therapy Education Program or Advanced Dental Therapy Education
• Mental Health Professional
• Pharmacy
• Physician Residency Training
• Physician Assistant

Applicants are strongly encouraged to partner with healthcare providers and provider organizations to create new rural or underserved rotations or clinical training experiences.

Project period: 1 year
Estimated number of awards: 4-6
Estimated total program funding: $1,500,000
