The Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) Program offers grants for academic departments and programs of institutions of higher education to support graduate fellowships for students. Awardees must provide fellowships for programs that lead either to a master's degree or a doctoral degree, whichever is the highest degree awarded in the area of need at the institution.

Health-related academic areas include:

• Environmental/Environmental Health Engineering
• Biological Sciences/Life Sciences
• Psychology

A detailed list of approved academic areas is provided in the application instructions.

Eligible applicants are academic departments of an institution of higher education that provide a course of study that leads to a graduate degree in an area of national need and have been in existence for at least 4 years at the time of application.

Competitive priority is given to:

• Historically Black colleges and universities
• Tribal colleges and universities
• Minority-serving institutions

Award ceiling: $750,000
Award floor: $100,000
Project period: Up to 3 years
Estimated number of awards: 60
Estimated total program funding: $20,479,535
