Purpose

The Maine Healthcare Workforce Initiative will provide grants to expand existing graduate medical education (GME) programs, develop new rural GME programs, and provide financial incentives for rural healthcare organizations and providers to serve as preceptors for clinical learners in Maine.

Allowable expenses include, but are not limited to:

  • Stipends to offset rural providers' clinical time to supervise/teach learners
  • Rural preceptor and/or faculty development costs
  • Housing costs for learners at rural sites
  • Resident salary costs for time attributable to rural sites
  • Mileage costs associated with driving to rural clinical sites
  • Costs associated with community engagement activities that support clinical learners and clinical preceptors and further strengthens the connection to rural communities
  • Costs associated with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts
Eligibility

Eligible applicants are sponsoring institutions that have the ability to oversee, support, and administer residency, fellowship, and clinical preceptorship programs.

Amount of funding

Up to $650,000 for proposals to support clinical preceptorships with a maximum of $75,000 per clinical site

Up to $950,000 for proposals to support expansion or new GME programs
