California is nicknamed "The Golden State" because of its rich history of gold mining that includes the infamous California Gold Rush of 1848. Known for its beautiful landscapes California is where you will find the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Lake Tahoe, and the giant Sequoia and Redwood trees. California covers 155,959 square miles, with a 2006 estimated population of 36,457,549 people – 843,315 living in rural California (USDA-ERS). Sacramento, the capital, is located in the north-central region of the state. The state’s largest cities are Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, and San Francisco. According to the 2005 Census, 77.0% of the state’s population is white, 6.7% is African American/Black, 12.2% is Asian, 1% is American Indian, and 35.2% is of Hispanic/Latino origin.
There are 359 hospitals in California, 33 of which
are located in rural areas (North Carolina Rural Health Research
and Policy Analysis Center, 2006). The state has 21 hospitals currently
identified by the Flex Monitoring Team as Critical Access Hospitals.
There are 343 Rural Health Clinics in California, and 97 Federally
Qualified Health Centers provide services at 691 sites in the state
(Kaiser, 2005). Most Californians have some form of health insurance
coverage, although 18% of its residents lack any health insurance
(Kaiser, 2004-2005.)
According to the Economic Research Service, the average per-capita income for all Californians in 2005 was $36,936, although rural per-capita income lagged at $28,271. 2004 estimates indicate a poverty rate of 12.9% exists in rural California, compared to a 13.2% level in urban areas of the State. 2000 data reports 17.8% of the rural population has not completed high school, while 23.3% of the urban population lacks a high school diploma. The unemployment rate in rural California is at 6.2%, while in urban California it is at 4.8% (USDA-ERS, 2006).

Because the Western Slope of El Dorado County includes several isolated, rural communities - none of which were large enough to support a medical practice, the El Dorado County Public Health Department and Marshall Hospital joined forces to create the Sierra Mobile Clinic to offer these communities primary and urgent medical care.
