The 2011 total estimated Connecticut population is 3,580,709 people – 306,940 living in rural Connecticut (USDA-ERS). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 82.3% of the state’s population is white, 11.1% is African American/Black, 4.0% is Asian, and 13.8% is of Hispanic/Latino origin (2011).
According to the Connecticut Office of Rural Health (2012), there are 29 non-federal short term or acute care general hospitals and one children's hospital in Connecticut. Four hospitals are located in the state's two micropolitan counties. Connecticut has zero Rural Health Clinics (Kaiser, 2012). Connecticut has 13 Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) and 131 FQHC delivery sites (Kaiser, 2010). 10.0% of Connecticut residents lack health insurance (Kaiser, 2011).
